International conference “Greening Modern Cities”
BuGG expert congress “Biodiversity of Green Buildings”
The German Association of Building Greening – Bundesverband GebäudeGrün e.V. (BuGG) is holding the BuGG expert congress “Biodiversity of Green Buildings” on April 24th and 25th, 2024 in Düsseldorf – a two-day face-to-face event on biological diversity around the building with green roofs and facades.
The Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety with Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke has taken over the patronage of the expert congress. Steffi Lemke will also provide a welcome video message.
The varied conference program with various specialist lectures on roof and facade greening is divided into five thematic blocks. These are chosen so that a general introduction to the topic of “biodiversity” first addresses the legal framework and then various scientific studies. Practical examples from companies and offices active in this area show various forms of implementation and information on direct and indirect funding and certification systems round off the specialist congress and provide perspectives.
- Introduction to “Biodiversity”
- Legal framework
- Scientific investigations
- Practical examples
- Funding and certification
After each thematic block with three to four presentations, there is a panel discussion with the speakers in which any remaining questions are answered and discussed.
An accompanying specialist exhibition from various companies and an additional poster exhibition from research and teaching round off the specialist event.
Dinner and networking
On the evening of April 24th there will be a joint dinner for the exhibitors, speakers, participants and the BuGG team.

Local leaders play a crucial role in not only meeting global and European climate targets, but taking sustainability to the next level. In 2024, they will gather in Aalborg (Denmark) for the 10th edition of the European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns (ESCT) to discuss, share ideas, and bolster their role in guiding Europe towards a secure and sustainable future.
The 2024 conference will once again demonstrate the urgent need for local governments to assume responsibility for urban transformation and lead the way in guiding Europe towards a secure and sustainable future. This will be Aalborg’s third time hosting an ESCT conference; their first times led to the ground breaking Aalborg Charter (1994) and Aalborg Commitments (2004), both of which have been recognised as local sustainability milestones.
Join over 800 participants from local and regional governments, European and international institutions, multilateral organisations, the research community, businesses, and civil society to be part of the movement for transformational change. Mark your calendars now!
The 2024 edition of this flagship conference series on local sustainable development will build on the legacy of previous conferences including, most recently, the 2020 conference that led to the Mannheim Message. ESCT 2024 will continue to the call for core systemic changes and key policy shifts needed to bring about transformation for a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable Europe.
