l’association de la végétalisation de l’îlot bâti et des infrastructures (ADIVET)
Founded in 2002 by stakeholders in the green roof sector, an emerging market at the time, Adivet later expanded to green facades and terrace gardens. Today, it broadens its scope to embrace the greening of entire residential blocks and infrastructure, particularly in urban areas. This reflects its commitment, supported by its members, to providing an essential response to climate issues and enhancing the well-being of urban dwellers today and tomorrow.
With climate change and biodiversity loss, particularly prevalent in cities, greening is becoming essential, in particular to combat urban heat islands, manage rainfall peaks and increase biodiversity. These issues have a direct impact on the health and well-being of a significant proportion of the population, with nearly 80% living in urban areas. Since cities are predominantly composed of hard surfaces, it is important to implement practical solutions to quickly expand necessary greening efforts.
This is why Adivet has expanded its focus beyond its original mission of greening buildings to include infrastructure, as greening of these areas addresses the same issues, often involves the same actors and provides similar ecosystem services. Examples of green urban infrastructures include parking decks, building bases, tram tracks, bus shelters, etc.
To embody the evolution of its positioning, Adivet has changed its signature to: “Greening the urban blocks and infrastructure“.
Adivet brings together all the players in the value chain of greening buildings and urban infrastructure, from clients – local authorities, developers, social housing providers, architects, landscape designers, design offices – to installers – waterproofing and landscaping companies , including technical inspectors, research and training organizations, related professional associations and solution or component suppliers.
As an interprofessional association, Adivet promotes the greening of urban blocks and urban infrastructure by ensuring best practices and adherence to industry standards, while also communicating the benefits of greening to public authorities, private and public clients and stakeholders in construction. The goal is to foster exemplary development of these techniques and to unite stakeholders around principles of quality, reliability and sustainability in order to implement the components of a sustainable city.
At the international level, Adivet is a member of two representative organisations, the EFB (European Federation of Green Roof and Living Wall Associations) and the WGIN (World Green Infrastructure Network).
Adivet’s missions:
- Promote the greening of buildings through communication – publications, website, e-newsletters, participation at various events, involvement in training programs and advocacy efforts.
- Participate in the creation and development of the professional technical framework: Adivet co-authored the French Professional Standards for Green Roofs and Terraces, together with the UNEP and the CSFE. It has also published the Technical recommendations for urban agriculture on roofs and drafted the first edition of guidelines for green faсades. Additionally, Adivet is working on biosolar roof guides nationally and internationally. Finally, in 2023, it introduced the GreenRoofScore, a benchmark for assessing the ecosystem performance of green roofs, soon to be available in digital form.
- Contribute to improving technical knowledge: By supporting or participating in research programs, Adivet works to advance knowledge of the ecosystem services provided by the greening of urban blocks and infrastructure. It also monitors the state of knowledge at the international level and regularly organizes conferences – on biodiversity in 2021, on water management in 2023 and, planned for 2025, on urban heat island mitigation. It shares research findings through various publications and organizes international study trips to explore practices and projects in contexts other than France.
- Act as an expert: Adivet responds to requests from its various audiences – public authorities, clients, students, etc. – to provide expertise based on over 20 years of experience.
- Report on market trends: Through its Observatory, Adivet annually assesses the state of the market, leveraging the representation of its members.
- Represent the industry: Adivet is the preferred point of contact for public authorities, related professional bodies, networks and sustainable development associations.
