Future Green City World Congress

Welcome to the Future Green City World Congress!

Over four days from 23 to 26 September 2024, more than 3,000 experts worldwide will share their passion and knowledge about the liveable green city with a future here.

The Future Green City World Congress is an initiative of the Royal Association Stadswerk of the Netherlands and the Royal Dutch Society for Garden Designers and Landscapers (VHG). In Utrecht, they bring together the worlds of green and civil engineering in cooperation with World Urban Parks (WUP) and the International Federation of Municipal Engineering (IFME). The congress connects construction, greenery, infra, and water. By showing different solutions and connecting networks in these domains, we are building a city with a future together.

This year’s NetworkNature Annual Conference | Busting myths: People ̶o̶r̶ with nature will focus on ‘busting myths’ in relation to ecosystem restoration and management. This event will revolve around myths that practice, research, policy making, and business are busting or that need to be busted to bring about transformative change and reverse biodiversity loss. The concept of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) and their features will arise from busting the myths, acknowledging that restoring nature is not a luxury but a necessity and an opportunity that brings many advantages, including in economic terms, and highlighting the potential of NbS to identify, capture and build on synergistic relationships between nature and people. Through case studies, personal and professional insights, research advancements and governance initiatives, the attendees will explore inspiring approaches for people and nature, with people and nature.

The widespread idea that people and nature are necessarily conflicting will be debunked through guiding experiences where people and nature exist through and benefit from each other.

The audience, including policymakers, local authorities, researchers, innovators, land planners and managers, investors and businesses, educators, artists, and society at large will be challenged by different presentations. They will debunk preconceived notions regarding the restoration, conservation, protection, management, and use of land and seas. The agenda will be structured in such a way to cover three key elements, namely the regenerating nature actions, governance and policy, and economy and valuation. Additionally, participants will be invited to engage in active debates and will have the opportunity to propose their own myths to bust.

Through a series of panel discussions, presentations as well as interactive activities and artistic components, the event will look at common myths about ecosystem management, while providing insights and knowledge on how NbS contribute to busting these myths and provide opportunities. This will be framed within current EU policy developments. The definition of the myths and presentations will be shaped through a dedicated open call as well as with a lineup of great speakers. The open call will invite NbS projects’ representatives and other relevant stakeholders to bring forward common myths they have encountered in relation to ecosystem management with respect to the three abovementioned elements, and the solutions they have put in place, with a clear emphasis on the synergistic relationship between nature and people and the role of NbS.

Can I contribute ?

Yes ! We invite you to share your insights by proposing your own myth to bust  and/or by exhibiting your own case study poster. Find out more about these two open-calls below :

We look forward to see you on September 25th, 2024 !

10th European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns 2024
Oct 1 – Oct 3 all-day

Local leaders play a crucial role in not only meeting global and European climate targets, but taking sustainability to the next level. In 2024, they will gather in Aalborg (Denmark) for the 10th edition of the European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns (ESCT) to discuss, share ideas, and bolster their role in guiding Europe towards a secure and sustainable future.

The 2024 conference will once again demonstrate the urgent need for local governments to assume responsibility for urban transformation and lead the way in guiding Europe towards a secure and sustainable future. This will be Aalborg’s third time hosting an ESCT conference; their first times led to the ground breaking Aalborg Charter (1994) and Aalborg Commitments (2004), both of which have been recognised as local sustainability milestones.

Join over 800 participants from local and regional governments, European and international institutions, multilateral organisations, the research community, businesses, and civil society to be part of the movement for transformational change. Mark your calendars now!

The 2024 edition of this flagship conference series on local sustainable development will build on the legacy of previous conferences including, most recently, the 2020 conference that led to the Mannheim Message. ESCT 2024 will continue to the call for core systemic changes and key policy shifts needed to bring about transformation for a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable Europe.

Reimagining Urban Spaces: Nature-Based Solutions for Inclusive Transformations in Europe and Latin America, 2 – 3 October 2024 – Granollers, Spain
Oct 2 – Oct 3 all-day

INTERLACE Final Conference in Granollers, Spain
 –

Nature-based solutions offer a powerful approach to help cities combat challenges such as urban sprawl, climate change, and pollution. By leveraging the regenerative power of nature, these solutions can restore degraded or damaged ecosystems, enhancing resilience against environmental threats and providing multiple benefits to society. Collaborative, action-driven research efforts involving policymakers, practitioners, and communities can facilitate the co-creation of knowledge, ensuring that solutions are grounded in local contexts and aligned with broader sustainability goals.

Organised by the EU-funded INTERLACE project on urban ecosystem restoration in Europe and Latin America, the event will foster dynamic discussions and share innovative practices from both regions. It will showcase learnings and resources around urban ecosystem restoration and nature-based solution planning and monitoring, inclusive stakeholder engagement and community participation, policy and governance, action-driven research, and cross-continental cooperation.

The conference will feature a mix of interactive sessions and hands-on workshops, inputs from experts and thought leaders in the field, and site visits to experience successfully implemented nature-based solutions.

Who Should Attend?

This event is tailored to all city makers – individuals passionate about creating greener, more inclusive urban environments! This includes representatives of local governments and NGOs, urban planners, researchers, and activists as well as policymakers, architects, institutional funders and representatives of EU institutions. Participation in the event is free of charge.

World Green Roof and Green Façade Congress Basel

Will the city of the future be greener?

Global warming increases the overheating of cities worldwide. More and more people today live in traffic-optimized urban areas characterized by concrete and asphalt. Significant cooling effects can be achieved on and around buildings with plants and their evaporation capacity.

Basel is considered the “world capital of green roofs”. With the scientific-practical world congress as well as a complementary Green Building Week, knowledge transfer is combined with illustration on practical examples through excursions in Basel and throughout Switzerland.

Uniting Experts in Science,
Planning, and Architecture

The World Congress is aimed at scientists, planners, architects, landscape architects, construction experts, greening specialists and representatives of public authorities.

Save the Date

The World Congress on Green Roofs and Facades Basel 2025 will be held on June 5 and 6, 2025, in the historic Kollegiengebäude of the University of Basel. The Green Buildings Week will take place from June 2 to 7, 2025 with a variety of excursions, guided tours, lectures and specialized courses.
