Technical Conference on Roof Greening and Vertical Landscaping in the Botanical Garden of Madrid

On March 23, 2023, EFB Spanish extraordinary member organization ASOCIACIÓN ESPAÑOLA DE CUBIERTAS VERDES Y AJARDINAMIENTOS VERTICALES (ASESCUVE) held an inspiring technical Conference on Roof Greening and Vertical Landscaping in the Botanical Garden of Madrid.
The aim of the event was to analyse the state of the art of local, national and European initiatives on green roofs and façades in order to develop concrete action roadmaps for more effective implementation of such green building constructions on site.

After a short welcoming by Andreu Massoni, the president of ASESCUVE, the first event block about respective European regulations, ordinances of reference, as well as European grants and funds, was held by EFB Vice President Paulo Palha. It was concluded with a presentation about actual actions for urban renaturalization in Spanish cities.

After a short coffee break several municipal policies from different fields (Environment and Mobility Government; Shipping, Urban Landscape; Park, Garden and Beach Services) presented ongoing interventions in the field of Nature-Based Solutions. This session was concluded by a round table which was moderated by ASESCUVE.

The last block was dedicated to an actual flagship project in Madrid – a planning initiative to create an innovative green urban landscape in the Central Park of Madrid Nuevo Norte. According to the winning proposal by WEST 8 and Porras y Guadiana Arquitectos, the area is supposed to become a large urban forest whose identity is linked with the memory of place, rising from the existing structure of the so-called “Chamartín Station”. With a surface area of 14.5 ha, the central park shall be integrated into the wider system of green areas of Madrid formed by the Metropolitan Forest (Bosque Metropolitano), the Green Arch (Arco Verde) and the network of parks within Madrid Nuevo Norte.

After this positive outlook, the technical conference was rounded off with a joint lunch in the lime tree courtyard of the botanical garden.
