Introducing the new EFB Publication:

Benefits of Green Buildings: Green Roofs, Green Walls and Vertical Indoor Greenery

The European Federation of Green Roof and Living Wall Associations (EFB) is proud to present the newly translated and updated publication: “Benefits of Green Buildings (Green Roofs, Green Walls, and Vertical Indoor Greenery) – A Compilation of Numbers, Data, and Facts from Different Investigations 2025”
A Collaborative Effort Across Europe

This comprehensive publication, originally developed based on the German versions prepared by the Bundesverband GebäudeGrün e.V. (BuGG) in Germany and Research and Innovation Lab GRÜNSTATTGRAU in Austria, has now been expanded to include the latest research results and case studies from across Europe. The newly compiled data highlights the numerous advantages of integrating green roofs, green walls, and indoor vertical greenery into our built environment.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our members and partners who provided invaluable insights and data to enrich this European edition. With the continued exchange of knowledge and expertise, we aim to further expand this document with more results, to promote green infrastructure solutions in Europe and beyond.

Why This Publication Matters

Green building solutions are at the forefront of urban innovation, sustainability, and climate resilience. As cities worldwide face increasing challenges from urban heat islands, air pollution, biodiversity loss, and energy inefficiencies, the role of green infrastructure has never been more critical.

This publication serves as a key reference for policymakers, urban planners, architects, and environmental professionals by providing scientific evidence on the many benefits of building greening, such as:

  • Climate Adaptation & Mitigation – Reducing the urban heat island effect and promoting energy efficiency.
  • Water Management – Enhancing rainwater retention and greywater reuse.
  • Air Quality & Carbon Sequestration – Filtering pollutants and contributing to CO2 reduction.
  • Health & Wellbeing – Improving indoor air quality, reducing stress, and boosting productivity.
  • Biodiversity & Urban Ecology – Creating habitats for pollinators and improving urban resilience.
  • Economic Benefits – Increasing property value, lowering energy costs, and extending building lifespan.
