BuGG Awards 2024

BuGG – Award 2024

Here are the winners of Germany

Every year, the Bundesverband GebäudeGrün e.V. (BuGG) organises the BuGG Award in three categories: roof, façade and interior. Once again this year, all BuGG members were invited to submit the best pictures and a short description of their projects – or projects in which they were involved. A total of 55 greening projects were put forward for the vote. For the first time, this was not only open to BuGG members, but anyone could take part.

Green roof: Greened bunker, Hamburg St. Pauli

Turning grey into green: the former anti-aircraft bunker in the heart of Hamburg shows what can be done with a listed concrete colossus. At a height of 58 metres, there is now an urban garden that is accessible free of charge. This visitor magnet was voted ‘BuGG Green Roof of the Year 2024’ by participants in a public vote and honoured with the BuGG Award from the Bundesverband GebäudeGrün e.V. (BuGG).

A lighthouse project for urban nature in the centre of a metropolis, privately financed by the developer Matzen Immobilien. This is how the St. Pauli bunker, planted with around 23,000 plants, can be described. The public green and communal areas were completed this year and cover around 10,000 square metres. The walk along a green ‘mountain path’ that winds upwards around the outside of the bunker is a special experience for visitors to the bunker, which also houses a new event hall and a hotel. In good weather, thousands of people visit the green attraction every day – one that is unique in terms of its appearance and use!

The aspect of monument protection was one of the challenges in the construction of the Stadtgarten. The historical substance and the new greenery were harmonised by the Landscape Architecture+ planners from Hamburg harmonised the historic substance and the new greenery. The garden was realised by Klaus Hildebrandt Garten- und Landschaftsbau AG, also from Hamburg and part of the Greenovis Group. The company is a partner of the green roof manufacturer Optigrün international AG. All three companies are members of the Bundesverband GebäudeGrün e.V. (BuGG). Numerous products and system solutions from Optigrün are used. In particular, the intelligent control of the retention roof surfaces to achieve minimum runoff volumes and maximum rainwater retention, as well as the linking of structural and civil engineering components, make the green bunker a role model for dealing with precipitation in an urban environment – in addition to the public accessibility and experience.

Green Wall: Exemplary greened headquarter, Fuchsstadt

At GEFÄSSERIE in the Franconian town of Fuchsstadt, everything revolves around greenery. The company has been realising vertical greening projects – both indoors and outdoors – for more than 35 years. The new company building was recently completed. As part of a public vote, the project was voted ‘BuGG Façade Greening of the Year 2024’ by participants and honoured with the BuGG Award from the Bundesverband GebäudeGrün e.V. (BuGG).

A green, sustainable future. That is the vision of the company GEFÄSSERIE – and realising it is the goal. It has more than succeeded at its own company headquarters in Fuchsstadt. GEFÄSSERIE greened the façade itself, using a system solution from the manufacturer Mobilane, based in Bemmel in the Netherlands. Both companies are members of the BuGG.

A total area of 172 m2 was covered with wall-bounded green wall system. This includes the four exterior walls of the main building and one wall of the warehouse. The modular MobiPanel system from Mobilane was used. It is lightweight and consists of pre-cultivated cassettes with native greenery. A total of 6,171 plants surround the GEFÄSSERIE. They absorb water from the internal water reservoir via a capillary microfibre cloth. An automatic irrigation and drainage system ensures a balanced water supply.

In addition to the façade greening, the roof of the office building and its interior spaces are also greened – the concept of ‘building greening’ has therefore been realised in an exemplary manner in a property with a green roof, façade and interior!

Indoor Green: BBQ-Restaurant, Cologne

Good room acoustics and a pleasant indoor climate: the Timberjacks BBQ restaurant in Cologne relies on a green wall to keep guests happy. In a public vote, the project was voted ‘BuGG Interior Greening of the Year 2024’ by the participants and honoured with the BuGG Award from the German Green Building Association (BuGG).

Timberjacks Holding relies on ‘real’ plants in the interior design of its BBQ restaurants. After a green wall was implemented at the Siegen site in 2021, it was the turn of the restaurant in Cologne last year. It is more than just a beautiful eye-catcher and design element. Both the acoustics and the indoor climate are improved by the green wall, creating an all-round feel-good ambience for guests.

The special feature and challenge of this green wall: the staircase to the upper floor is located directly in front of the plant wall. There is also an opening in the wall for access to other rooms. This customised design has made it possible by the use of the LivePanel Indoor greening system from Mobilane.  The fully recyclable vertical greening system includes plant cassettes filled with substrate. In this case, the plants were pre-cultivated and provided immediate greenery on an area of around 41 m2. The project was planned and realised by the wall greening company GEFÄSSERIE from Fuchsstadt.
