Green Market Report 2023
Czech Republic
The interest in green roofs is growing in the Czech Republic, as confirmed by the latest data research from the Green Roofs and Facades Association (ZES). While in 2014 the number of 110,000 m² of new green roofs, in 2023 this number has climbed to a record with 495,000 m². This can be compared like the size of approximately sixty football fields. Over the last ten years, the amount of newly built green roofs has more than tripled. This increase underlines not only the enhanced awareness of the importance of green roofs for urban sustainability, but also the growing demand for green building solutions.
Gradual growth and a significant jump in 2017
The data shows that interest in green roofs has grown steadily since 2014, when 110,000 m² of green roofs were added. However, there was a significant jump in 2017 when 195,000 m² of new green roofs were implemented, representing a 50% increase on the previous year. Since then, additions have been steadily increasing and the last four years have seen an acceleration of this growth, reaching 495,000 m² in 2023.

Extensive Green roofs are mostly built
From the data obtained, it is evident that extensive green roofs, which make up the majority of newly installed green roofs, are significantly predominant in the Czech Republic. Extensive roofs, which are easier to maintain and require less substrate, are an ideal choice for buildings with lower allowable loads or usage requirements. In 2023, 429,000 m² of extensive roofs were installed, almost triple the number installed in 2017.
Intensive green roofs, which allow for a wider range of vegetation and require more substrate, remain stable, with 66,000 m² installed in 2023. However, the ratio between extensive and intensive roofs is gradually increasing in favour of extensive roofs, indicating a preference for cheaper and less demanding solutions.
Significant growth in the turnover of the green roof sector
The growing interest in green roofs is also reflected in the economic performance of the sector.
In 2017, the turnover of the green roof industry in the Czech Republic reached CZK 333 million, while in 2023 it will reach CZK 917 million, which represents a more than threefold increase within six years. The most significant year-on-year increase was recorded between 2022 and 2023, when turnover grew by 32.5%. This leap in growth reflects the growing demand for green solutions and the improved availability of financial support, for example through subsidy programmes .

Conclusion
The data analysis shows that the interest in green roofs in the Czech Republic is growing rapidly and this trend is likely to continue in the coming years. Green roofs are becoming an increasingly popular element of sustainable construction and an important tool in the fight against climate change. The Czech Green Roof and Façade Association ZES expects this trend to continue to grow, also thanks to the continued support of green initiatives and the increasing awareness of the benefits of green roofs.
