EFB signs a joint statement on the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive

As negotiations for the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD) gained momentum, EFB joined 18 organizations to advocate for an ambitious update of the directive.

Together, the signatories, representing non-profit associations, businesses, and industry groups, emphasize the importance of modernizing this 30-year-old legislation to address current water challenges effectively. Specifically, they highlight the need to integrate innovative solutions like green infrastructure into wastewater management strategies to enhance urban resilience and minimize pollution.

Among their key recommendations is the prompt implementation of integrated urban wastewater management plans, prioritizing the adoption of green and blue infrastructure to safeguard cities against climate impacts and mitigate pollution from urban runoff and wastewater.

This collective effort precedes the upcoming trilogue meeting on the UWWTD scheduled for January 29, expected to advance negotiations on the directive’s revision.
