Presentation of a New Model for successful Flood Risk Management at the “Social Innovation for Climate Resilience”-Conference in Plymouth (UK)

On March 15, the Conference “Social Innovation for Climate Resilience” has taken place in the IHG Hotel at Crowne Plaza Plymouth (UK) with the aim of exploring the role of social innovation in response to flooding and climate change. According to the conference topic expert speakers from the UK and France discussed flood risk in the broader context of climate change resilience. Against this backdrop a new social innovation resilience model which had been developed over the last two years within the framework of the Building Resilience in Communities (BRIC) project was presented. The model includes:

• the public launch of the BRIC Resilience Network Web Platform
• innovative engagement methods and activities
• awareness raising technology

The conference was moderated by Justin Leigh, an experienced former BBC Spotlight presenter, TV and radio host and journalist. The main target audience for the event was flood risk management authorities such as water companies, environmental agencies, lead local flood authorities (LLFAs), local councils, politicians, people and organizations interested in flooding and climate resilience, and flood-prone communities. Interested participants received a copy of the BRIC Model Guide to assist them in implementing activities similar to those in the BRIC project.

Dusty Gedge, President of the European Federation of Green Roof and Walls Association (EFB), was one of the invited speakers who shared their experience and knowledge on sustainable and resilient spatial development. In his presentation focused on biodiversity, he emphasized the positive impact of green roofs on the environmental and social agenda. In this way, he showed delegates that caring for nature and people can make a real difference to communities.
He also spoke about the EFB’s current international activities and introduced the virtual Metabuilding platform, created to help stakeholders in the broader construction sector find available funding and innovative techniques, services and products for SME innovation.
